Damien Jurado keeps rolling on. - Oh My Rockness

Band We Like

Damien Jurado keeps rolling on.

April 20, 2009
Seattle's Damien Jurado has been around for a quite a few years now, and it seems he's still kind of depressed like Seattle's Pedro the Lion (Jurado's good buddy) always was. And that's saying something since David Bazan's now-defunct band distressed over lust, murder and sin with the best of them. What is it about that city and depression? Oh I know, maybe it's because it rains ALL THE TIME. But Jurado always seems to be at his best when focuses on stripped-down, haunting, acoustic DESPAIR. That's just the way he rolls.

Besides Pedro, his music is similar in tone and feeling to Nick Drake, Cat Power, and Elliott Smith. Not exactly a cheery group there. Jurado has always had rich country/folk elements prominent in his work and pulls off an unbelievable feat of actually making twang listenable. This is often dark, brooding music that captures one aspect of this life. Either you dig it or you don't. It depends on what kind of week you're having.
