No Joy rocks the shoegaze noise thing. - Oh My Rockness

No Joy rocks the shoegaze noise thing.

January 10, 2011
Montreal/L.A.'s No Joy is a female-fronted band that rather rocks out. And they do so using that heavily distorted shoegaze noise thing. You know that thing. And you love that thing if you love bands like HEALTH, Pinkshinyultrablast (who no one has ever heard of, but you should check out), Megaphonic Thrift (another band you haven't heard of) and, of course, Sonic Youth (I hear some Kim Gordon-esque vocals in No Joy, too).

So yeah, this is the hard-hitting type of shoegaze... not The Pains of Being Pure at Heart kind of shoegaze (both equally good, it just depends on what you want that day).

There's also a bit of haze going on here with all that gaze. And that haze sometimes makes things sound kind of beach-y. Maybe that's why No Joy has recently played shows with Best Coast and Ducktails?

Their debut full-length is out on Mexican Summer (Tamaryn, Real Estate, Kurt Vile, Washed Out, and well, lots of other good bands).

No Joy play The Satellite, on Wednesday, January 19th.
