Tijuana Panthers play it punk...but poppy, too.

January 24, 2011
Long Beach's Tijuana Panthers play bounce-y punk that sounds a lot like what The Soft Pack are doing (they share a label with that band too; 1928 Recordings). If you know The Soft Pack, you know what you're in for with Tijuana Panthers.

They've got some of that good jingle-jangle, mixed with some garage rock, and also a little bit of that rockabilly thing going on too. And don't forget a smattering of '60s sunshine pop. There's always the sunshine pop at play. It's all very pleasant to listen to, in that punk rock sort of way.

Tijuana Panthers aren't dirty punks though. They're clean punks. Is that an oxymoron like jumbo shrimp or music writer? I don't know. But I do know that when I'm listening to Tijuana Panthers, I want to bounce my head and maybe throw down a yo-yo toss or two. I don't do it (I haven't played with a yo-yo since at LEAST two summers ago), but I want to.

Tijuana Panthers play The Echo, on Thursday, January 27th.
