The Long Blondes blow-up. - Oh My Rockness

Band We Like

The Long Blondes blow-up.

May 26, 2008
Here comes Kate, Dorian, Emma, Reenie and Screech. No, we're not talking about Save By the Bell: The Out-of-Work Years. We're talking about The Long Blondes. It seems almost impossible for this buzzing U.K. band with a beautiful singer NOT to be huge. Even with the looks, they have the right sound (post-punk meets New Wave meets disco), they're from the right country, and they got their feet wet on the right label for hype (the ever-solid What's Your Rupture? - also home to Love is All).

They've since moved on to Rough Trade Records, on which they just released a critically acclaimed new album called "Couples." That record is really making the kids rock out and dnace just like it's the skiing years of Studio 54 all over again.

Vocalist Kate Jackson has Karen O's swagger, Carrie Brownstein's snarl, and Debbie Harry's pipes. In fact, this glam-punk sounds a lot like when Blondie first toed that tricky line between punk and glam-disco circa 1979. The Long Blondes come with a little bit more of an edge, and better bass lines, than Blondie though.

The Long Blonde's have opened for everyone from Franz Ferdinand to Maximo Park to Death From Above 1979, and they even played England's massive Reading Festival. Their fame will not be denied.
