The Best Shows This Week: King Tuff, Bob Mould, Simian Mobile Disco, Trust, JEFF The Brotherhood, Cymbals Eat Guitars and more!
Written by Patrick McNamara
Thanks again for choosing to spend your procrastinating time with this music blob. If you forget everything else we tell you this week please don't forget these two things. #1 We lUv U. #2 Won't let U down.
Let’s get into the goodness.
Forever and Ever.
#1. King Tuff - Amoeba - Tuesday - September 23 - 2014 A.D.
Scuzzy post-garage* punkster popster masters King Tuff play a free show at some little known underground record store or something at 6 PM. And free oftentimes means you don’t have to pay, man. This one will probably get wild. But then again, wild is how the post-garage* punkster popster masters do.
*no idea
#2. Simian Mobile Disco - El Rey - Thursday - September 25 - 2014 A.D.
This duo has been slinging nothing but the hits since I was just a little hustler with a local music blob and a big data entry dream. See them perform songs from their new album “Whorl” which does not include the following song. (I can't believe "Hustler" is 7 years old. Hey, Time. Stop tripping.)
#3. JEFF The Brotherhood - The Echo - Friday - September 26 - 2014 A.D.
This duo has been around the block too. They have been shredding the guitar/drum psych-post-something-fuzz-pop since 2001, son (but it took 8 years for anyone to notice - always remember to wait out your dreams - just keep doing what you want to do until the dream has no choice but to give in and let you have it - if for nothing more than just to shut you up). Anyway. Yeah. JEFF the Brotherhood. Good band.
(psst - they're also playing the Observatory on Sunday but you didn't hear it from me, man - trust no one)
#4. Trust - The Fonda - Saturday - September 27 - 2014 A.D.
Toronto’s Trust = easy big time beats + sexy synths + smooth vocals = a good goddamn pop time. Please now enjoy the best Trust song. Warning. It is extremely old. (“whoa, what was two years ago even LIKE, man????”)
(*every mathematical band equation must have two sets of answers as a direct result of the Dynamic Digital Blob Uprising of 2019 - yeah, I've got a time machine - get used to it)
#5. Bob Mould and Cymbals Eat Guitars - The Roxy - Sat/Sun - September 27/28 - 2014 A.D.
Great pairing here. You have got your Husker Du and Sugar man keeping his solo train chugging. And then you’ve got a super solid band straight outta Staten Island that pumps out underrated hit after hit.
Please now enjoy one of the finest songs of the modern post-alt-popster era.
Amen.
