The Best Shows in LA This Week: CHVRCHES, Thee Oh Sees, Girlpool, Pity Sex, Okkervil River, The 1975, Vince Staples, Muse, Dan Deacon, The Bronx and lots more goodness!
Written by Patrick McNamara
This is a very good week for good shows in/on/and/around LA (click here to see all the goodness) but the following five shows are the very best according to this music blob.
Thank you for spending a few moments of your procrastination time considering good bands, not bad.
#1 CHVRCHES - The Fonda Theatre - Monday - December 14 - 2015 A.D.
Did you know that “Make Them Gold" by CHVRCHES was included in our Top 15 Songs of 2015? Now…. you…. dooooooo. See one of the best synth pop bands in the game play that song and more from their (so good) album “Every Open Eye" at The Fonda on Monday.
Please note: the following CHVRCHES song should be the official montage song of Rio Olympics 2016. Imagine listening to it during a montage of our athlete's finest moments from the games? She sticks the landing. He flips just right. They clip the tape. Would be perfect, right? I know!
#2 Thee Oh Sees - Teragram Ballroom - Wed/Thurs - December 16/17 - 2015 A.D.
San Francisco rock 'n roll HEROES These Oh Sees play two shows at Teragram Ballroom. John Dwyer and crew are gonna let it rip like do. Since 1997, man. If you don't have a good time at this show you must be carrying some serious weight and I hope you get through it soon.
#3 Girlpool - Echoplex - Friday - December 18 - 2015 A.D.
Girlpool is a fantastic melodic punk duo (no drums, please) and I last saw them when they played FYF Fest this summer but I was a little distracted at that one. Get to Echoplex tonight if you're the type that likes going to see good bands. Added bonus, this one's a holiday canned food drive.
#4 Pity Sex - The Echo - Friday - December 18 - 2015 A.D.
Ann Arbor's super solid fuzz punks Pity Sex play The Echo (they're good) with Colleen Green (she's good too) and eskimeaux (good x 3). This show wins the Triple Crown of goodness.
#5 Okkervil River (solo) - Hollywood Forever Cemetery - Sat/Sun - December 19/20 - 2015 A.D.
Indie rock vet Will Sheff (aka Okkervil River) will play his acclaimed 2005 album “Black Sheep Boy" at Hollywood Forever twice this week and people are DYING to get into this.
(That joke is like a fine wine, it gets better with age and when you're drunk.)
Other notable shows this week = The 1975 at Club Nokia + DNTEL at The Airliner + Crocodiles at The Smell + J Fernandez at Bootleg + Muse at Staples Center + Vince Staples at The Observatory + The Bronx at Teragram Ballroom + No Parents at The Observatory + Miley Cyrus and Dan Deacon at The Wiltern
Have fun out there!
