The 5 Best Shows in LA This Week

August 26, 2014

Written by Patrick McNamara

Out of all the shows happening in greater LA this week, the following five are the best. Because, it’s like, what does the word “subjective” even really MEAN, mannnn? Like, you know, in the grand scheme of the cosmos? How, like, we’re all spinning on this round rock in the sky and how not only are we not falling off but we’re also surrounded by all these blazing stars and how everything is so big and we’re all so small and stuff? There is no such thing as “subjective” in Outer Space, mannnn.

These are the 5 Best Shows in LA This Week. And that fact is, like, 10000% fundamental.

#1. Ty Segall - The Echo - Thurs + Fri + Sat + Sun - August 28th - August 31st - 2014 A.D.

One of the most prolific players in the garage pop game is playing four shows in a row at The Echo. Because of course Ty Segall is. There are no half measures with that dude. You should go to one of these and watch the goodness flow. And I should mind my own business.

#2. Mission of Burma - The Roxy - Thurs - August 28th - 2014 A.D.

Legendary Boston post-punks Mission of Burma have been repping their stabby jabby guitar goodness forever. Well, OK. Not forever. Here are some notable things that transfixed this great nation the year Mission of Burma formed: Rocky II + Apocalypse Now + The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy + The Sony Walkman went on sale in Japan + the Bee-Gees sell out Dodger Stadium + Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park in Chicago + Thurman Munson dies + Atari releases Asteroids.

(big thanks to Wikipedia for making this happen)

#3. Roses - Perhspace - Fri - August 29th - 2014 A.D.

This new-ish band sounds exactly like what a band called “Roses” should sound like - if you pay no attention to the heartbreak. Features Juan from Abe Vigoda. The band. Not the actor. That guy is cool too, though. And he’s impossibly still alive. Or is he???????

#4. Burger Records Bash - Los Globos - Sun - August 31st - 2014 A.D.

Burger Records have been ruling the lo-fi jingle jangle scuzz punk game for awhile now. Today’s party in their honor feature a bunch of good bands, including Cherry Glazerr + Jacuzzi Boys + The Lovely Bad Things + OFF! + well, we can sit here and chit-chat all day about this. Just click here. All lo-fi jingle jangle scuzz punk mysteries will be revealed.

#5. Sleep - Troubadour - Sun - August 31st - 2014 A.D.

This much loved (by a loud and fervent some) doom metal band is a bunch of dope smokers. Don’t trust ‘em. Personally, I never touch the stuff. I just sit around and, like, consider the cosmos. Not sure if you knew, but we’re all on a big rock spinning in SPACE, mannnn! Whoa. I bet the stars are so beautiful up there. So twinkly. So bright. It's good to be alive, mannnn. Life is alright.
