The 5 Best Shows in LA This Week!

September 2, 2014

Written by Patrick McNamara

Boo-hoo. It's September. Cheer up, alts! Sure. Summer may unofficially officially be over. And yeah, you can’t wear those white pants again for quite some time (unless you want to break all the rules of fashion - and thus become a fashion icon). But there’s still plenty of show goodness out there to see.

Don’t believe me? Allow me to explain.

#1. Bear in Heaven - Echoplex - Tuesday - September 2nd - 2014 A.D.

Sublime Brooklyn band Bear in Heaven haven’t played these parts in a while. Pretty sure of that. I could check when their last LA date was. But I have a music blob to run. Who has time for research? Anyway, you should go see these guys. File Under: good. RIYL: bands that don’t suck.

#2. OK GO + Allah-las - Santa Monica Pier - Thursday - September 4th - 2014 A.D.

I bet you thought there weren’t any more FREE shows now that we’re unofficially official done with summer. OK GO and Allah-Las say “Wrong!” Sure. The light is fading. But September has its charms. Things are still chill. Cheer up. There are no tears on piers.

#3. Atmosphere - Hollywood Palladium - Friday + Saturday - September 5/6th - 2014 A.D.

Long running Minneapolis hip-hopster duo Atmosphere (rapper Slug + producer Ant) play two shows at the Palladium. There will be no naysayers at this one. Only Rhymesayers. (They also play Monday at the Observatory but I couldn't make it fit all in one line. This has been this week's installment of Behind the Music Blob.)

#4. The Rentals + We Are Scientists - The Fonda - Friday - September 5th - 2014 A.D.

Remember when Matt Sharp left Weezer for The Rentals? That was pretty cool. See these veteran rock popsters play The Fonda (and Sunday at The Glass House). Also playing are delightful rock popsters We Are Scientists, one of the funniest bands on Twitter.

#5. Aphex Twin listening party - Somewhere - Saturday - September 6th - 2014 A.D.

A listening party making The Best 5 Shows This Week? It’s not even a show! I know. I know. But it’s Aphex Twin. The rules don’t apply to Richard D. James. If you want to go to this and listen to his new album “SYRO” you need to RSVP by the end of the day, September 2nd, for the chance to win a spot. They haven't announced the venue yet. Don't worry about it, though. You and I both are probably not getting into this one, anyway.

Honorable Mention:

#6 Fartbarf - Redwood Bar - Friday - September 5th

Because with a name like Fartbarf, its gotta be good!
