The 5 Best Shows in LA This Week: Fartbarf + Zola Jesus + Speedy Ortiz + Anoraak + Frankie Cosmos + Porches + more!

There are a lot of good shows this week.

But these are the 5 best ones.

Bet.

#1. Frankie Cosmos + Porches + Los Angeles Police Department - Jewels Catch One - Tuesday - October 7th - 2014 A.D.

The rare triple threat pop treat. I love when I get to see three good pop bands for the price of one. And that’s exactly what this situation is. NYC’s Frankie Cosmos play delightful, well-crafted indiepop and their songs will be stuck in your head for days (I’m singing that one about “Owen” to myself right now as I type this). NYC’s Porches pop it pretty good too but their pop grooves with a smooth chill that’s reminiscent of early Sea & Cake. I like it. And Los Angeles Police Department is the sublime lo-fi bedroom pop of Ryan Pollie. He’s good.

#2. Zola Jesus - El Rey Theatre - Thursday - October 9th - 2014 A.D.

This artist keeps getting better. And she started pretty damn good to begin with. But her upcoming album “Taiga” is the kind of thing that starts stadium tours. Zola is going for the big time and she’s going to make it.

#3. Fartbarf - El Cid - Friday - October 10th - 2014 A.D.

With a name like Fartbarf it’s gotta be good! I recently wrote some truly 100% dynamic copy about this 100% fun band. You should read it. And I should mind my own business. Regardless, it will be virtually impossible for you to NOT have fun if you go to this show. So...just throwing that out there, man.

#4. Anoraak - King King - Friday - October 10th - 2014 A.D.

France’s Anoraak (singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer/remixer) has been making the big time synth JAMS for a few years now. If you haven’t seen his retro electro you really should try to do so. It’ll be like going inside “Tron.” Here’s the JAM that started it all for me. It's 6 years old. It still holds up.

#5. Speedy Ortiz - The Echo - Sunday - October 12th - 2014 A.D.

Speedy Ortiz has turned into one of the best bands in the game. I said it. I believe it. That settles it. Go see them if you’re the type of person interested in seeing good bands. Not recommended if you like seeing bands that suck.
