The Top 5 Best Shows in LA This Week

This one's for Robin.

#1. Death From Above 1979 - Troubadour - Thursday - August 14 - 2014 A.D.

These two Canadian thrash dance punks released one full-length album ten years ago. Ten! Time. Oh, time! Like sands through the hourglass, so are we all just dust in the winds, dudes. DFA 1979 (we knew them before the 1979 was added - no big deal - we’re the music blob behind the blob behind the blob) broke up for a bunch of years between then and now. But they’re finally back with another album. You can hear them play songs from it at the Troubadour. It will be a most melodious noise. Go. Be excellent to each other. And party on, dudes.

#2. Superchunk - Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock - Friday - August 15 - 2014 A.D.

This Chapel Hill band has been good forever. And by forever, I mean since 1989 (aka MCMLXXXIX - the year everyone was mad about The Little Mermaid, Joe Montana, and this new Nintendo competitor called Sega Genesis - 16-bit. boom. for real.). When you look up “indie rock” in the dictionary, Superchunk has gotta be in there. Little known fact. Members of this band also started Merge Records. What ever happen to that little label?

#3. The Antlers - Max Sennett Studios - Friday - August 15 - 2014 A.D.

Brooklyn’s The Antlers would like to play their pretty and sad songs for you tonight. And they’re going to go ahead and do it for free. Aw. Those guys are always doing sweet things like that. You need to RSVP. Not sure if the list is still open or not. We just blob here. Click this and all answers will be revealed.

#4. Echo Park Rising - Various Venues - Fri + Sat + Sun - August 15/16/17 - 2014 A.D.

The lineup for this year’s Echo Park Rising is INTENSE. It took us over an hour just to list the damn thing (we list all of our shows by hand - because we’re stupid). Click that word INTENSE and you’ll see what we mean, but just to give you a little flavor of what’s to come, good bands like Amanda X + Allah-Las + Kevin Morby + Roses + Dream Boys + Plague Vendor are all playing. Have fun out there. Pre-game party in the Walgreens parking lot. We’ll be the alts wearing the wacky caps. #vote #fedoras #NO

#5. Woodsist Festival - Pappy & Harriet’s - Saturday - August 16 - 2014 A.D.

OK. Fine. Pioneertown isn’t LA. But this one might be worth hitching up your wagon and travelling with them doggies to. Because a bunch of good bands are playing, including Woods + Foxygen + Cass McCombs + The Fresh & Onlys + well, we’re not going to sit here and tell you EVERYBODY who’s playing this thing. Got to keep a sense of mystery on this blob. Gotta keep things spicy.

Have fun out there.

Carpe Diem.
